HALEWOOD
'Halewood' is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley, Merseyside, England, situated to the south-east of Liverpool. Though not officially part of Liverpool, it marks the southern edge of the city's urban area, being bordered by the southern suburbs of Hunts Cross and Woolton and once was part of Liverpool (its postcode is still L26) until Liverpool's boundaries were reduced. However, people from Halewood still regard themselves as from Liverpool, as many of them were moved there from the city anyway.
Halewood is home to a massive Ford Motor Company production facility which today produces the Jaguar X-Type and the Land Rover Freelander in U.S. markets the Freelander 2 is known as LR2. There is also the Dista Factory which produces pharmaceuticals. Everton Football Club are currently constructing a training ground and youth academy on the edge of the town.
The original Halewood Village is close to an area of new homes and sprawling estates.
Parts of Halewood struggle with high crime, anti-social behaviour, high unemployment levels and poor housing. To date, various attemps at regeneration of this area have been largely unsuccessful, mainly due to lack of investment. However, there is renewed hope with new plans for redevelopment of the "Leathers Lane" shopping area, which was once the heart of the local community.
However, other parts of Halewood are much more upper class, new housing developments have created houses in the top range of prices where the old sports centre, Bridgefield Forum was before it was knocked down and replaced with Halewood Sports Centre in a new location.
Steve McMahon, the former Liverpool FC midfielder, was born in Halewood. [1]
