Sports

The Wrestling team has won numerous county and state championships dating from 1990. Hammond's wrestling program gained a resurgence in the 2004–2005 season with County, Region, and State championships, and repeated the feat during the 2005–2006 season. In the 2003-2004 school year Hammond received possibly its greatest wrestler in its prestigous history, Vince Taweel. Taweel won three state titles and was favored for a fourth but in the state tournement, he tore a ligament in his knee and had to default out. Thats not to say his senior season wasn't successful. In January, Taweel won quite possibly the most prestigous tournement in Maryland, Mount Mat Madness, hosted by wrestling powerhouse, Mt. Saint Joseph, beating a nationally ranked opponent in the finals. Vince will be wrestling for Duke this fall. Also Devon Gillett, a senior with Taweel, won two state championships for Hammond. For his freshman and sophomore years he attended Anne Arundel High School and placed 6th in his sophomore year in the 3A-4A state championship tournement. He will be wrestling for Newberry College in the fall. Their 2006–2007 undefeated Howard County record ended on January 23, 2007 however, when rival River Hill High School won, 34–32.
Hammond's boys' Soccer team won back-to-back regional crowns in 2001 and 2002. In 2006, the team had its most successful season, winning a State Championship with a 3–1 victory over Loch Raven, after reaching the state finals in 2005.
The Football and Volleyball teams do not have a very prestigious history but there are several talented athletes on each. Sophomore Quarterback Samuel Plazak has set many passing records and is expected to improve greatly over his Junior and Senior Years. Meg Harley, the Volleyball setter, is also a very accomplished athlete who has won numerous awards.[1] There are several other tremendous athletes on both the Football and Volleyball teams which are both projected to be in the top half of the county in the fall of 2007.

Current Events

On June 15 2007, a student brought a loaded handgun with several extra clips to school. The student was arrested, and there were fears that there was a hit list, but those rumors appeared to be unsubstantiated. During the 2006-2007 school year Hammond became softball state champions, with the state-renouned pitcher, Stephanie Spiereman, throwing a no-hitter game. Stephanie is currently a junior at the high school.[2]

Trivia

In the 1980s, the school was often referred to as "The Zoo on 32," a phrase which dates back to when Guilford Road was called Old Route 32.
