HANSFORD COUNTY, TEXAS


'Hansford County' is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 5,369. The county is named for John M. Hansford, a Texas state congressman and judge. Hansford County is one of 46 prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in the state of Texas. Its seat is Spearman6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,384 km² (920 mi²). 2,382 km² (919 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it (0.07%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,369 people, 2,005 households, and 1,489 families residing in the county. The population density was 2/km² (6/mi²). There were 2,329 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 79.88% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 17.47% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 31.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,005 households out of which 36.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.00% were married couples living together, 5.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% were non-families. 24.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the county, the population was spread out with 29.30% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,438, and the median income for a family was $40,281. Males had a median income of $29,022 versus $17,668 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,408. About 12.00% of families and 16.40% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.60% of those under age 18 and 15.00% of those age 65 or over.
