HAWKE CUP

The 'Hawke Cup' is a cricket competition for New Zealand's District Associations. Apart from 1910/11, 1912/13 and 2000/01 the competition has always been on a challange basis. In order to win the Hawke Cup the challanger must beat the holder on their home ground. Teams from New Zealand's 4 "main centres", Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin have not usually competed for the Hawke Cup, although they did participate for much of the 1990s. They have been excluded from 2000/01. Since then, the team from Hamilton, the city at the centre of New Zealand's fourth largest urban area, has been the strongest team in the competition.
There are 4 regional zones in the Hawke Cup.
Zone 1
Hamilton,
Northland,
Counties-Manukau,
Bay of Plenty,
Poverty Bay,
Waikato Valley
Zone 2
Hawkes Bay,
Marlborough,
Nelson,
Horowhenua Kapiti,
Manawatu,
Taranaki,
Wairarapa,
Wanganui
Zone 3
Mid Canterbury,
Buller,
Canterbury Country,
South Canterbury,
Mid Canterbury,
West Coast
Zone 4
North Otago,
Southland,
Central Otago
The Holder's then play the winners of the play off between the winners of Zone 3 and the winners of Zone 4. The (new) Holder's also play the winner of Zone 1 and the winner of Zone 2. Hawke Cup games are played over 3 days. To win the Hawke Cup a challanger must beat the Holder outright or win on the first innings.
The current Holder's are Taranaki.
