HECKSCHER STATE PARKWAY

The 'Heckscher State Parkway' is an long parkway in Suffolk County, New York. The western terminus is at the Sagtikos State Parkway in West Islip, where it continues west as the Southern State Parkway. The eastern terminus is at the entrance to Heckscher State Park in Great River. The Heckscher State Parkway comprises the eastern portion of 'New York State Reference Route 908M', an unsigned reference route, with the Southern occupying the western section.
There is very little to indicate the actual existence of the parkway's name, as it is signed as an extension of the Southern State Parkway. Exceptions, however, are located along NY 27 and NY 27A.
It originally was a two lane road in 1930 labeled the Heckscher Spur stretching from NY 27A in Islip to the Heckscher State Park on the south shore. The official Parkway was started in 1959, along with the reconstruction of the interchange between the Sagtikos State Parkway and the Southern State Parkway. From there the parkway shows more modern parkway design, with extended medians, and features a unique dual service road that goes both ways (Spur Drive North and South).
