History

Construction

HML was built in 1970 and opened its doors in 1971; the school was built to serve the newly formed community of Miami Lakes, Florida as well as the city of Opa-Locka and parts of Hialeah, Florida. HML was constructed in what was then a sparsely populated rural area in Northwestern Miami-Dade County, but over the years, the area has grown into a large suburban community. It is one of five high schools serving the densely populated Miami suburb of Hialeah, Florida.
Academic problems

Lakes was one of five high schools affected by the district's new zero-tolerance response to schools receiving failing grades on the state's FCAT examination. This has forced the district to administer tougher school policies, including the shortening of boundaries to lower school population and average class size. The district has also boosted funding for educational purposes against FCAT policy that schools receiving a lower grade also receive lower funding. The district has also threatened to remove ninth grade students from HML, as well as begin to cut extra curricular activities if it doesn't meet the county's standards within the next three years. As a response, the school's administration has implemented a longer school schedule (7:30-3:30) with classes dedicated specifically to passing the FCAT examination as well as a uniform policy that began in the 2005-2006 school year. This has come as a shock to the local community as in recent years Lakes has been one of the best schools in the area in terms of education. It is believed that a recent increase in gang and criminal activity amongst youth in the area may be contributing to its poor performance. In the 2005-2006 school year Lakes rose from a D school to a C and scored 340 points on the FCAT school grading scale (a 22 point improvement) and even surpassed rival Hialeah High School in the state standards. However, during the 2006-2007 school year, Lakes was one of ten Miami-Dade high schools to receive a grade of 'F' from the state.[1]

Future

Between 2006 and 2010, all high schools in the Miami-Dade County Public School System will shift over to the Collegiate-Honors System at which time the Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Top 10 system will be abolished. Instead, Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude honors will be awarded to the top members of each class. The Class of 2008 will be the last Lakes class to be designated a Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Top 10 students list. The change came about as a complete overhaul of the high school curriculum system modeled after the New York Public School System and implemented by the school board and superintendent. The system is already in place at the newly built John A. Ferguson High School and will be implemented at the new Ronald W Reagan Doral High School beginning Fall of 2006. The system will be gradually applied to every high school in the system over the next four years.

Extracarricular Activities & The Activities Department

The Hialeah Miami-Lakes Activities Department (under the attentive and experienced eye of Ms. Gloria Rionda) is an endlessly busy one, with one of the highest standards in United Way donations as well as blood-drive donations, with such an active and charitable student body, the task of coordinating all the events is the duty of the elite Student Government Association (SGA). Lakes also has three student publications; ''Aeneid'', the school yearbook (in publication of its 36th volume) under the tutelage of Ms. Michelle Arteaga which is aptly named after Vergil's epic of the Trojans founding of Rome, ''The Trojan Times'', the school newspaper sponsored by Ms. Catherine Manfra, has recently published an opinion article that has drawn much attention for its straightforward perspective on racism and the recent replacement of the previous Drama professor, the newspaper is also currently taking part in a program in which an editor from the Miami Herald is making frequent visits to the journalism class and advising on the publication, and ''WHML News'', the school television channel (sponsored by Mr. David Ruiz) which has provided sports footage for the local NBC frequently.

'The Band Program'

Recognized as a performing arts academy by The Miami-Dade County School Board, the national award-winning band program at Hialeah-Miami Lakes provides students with a musical education in the areas of wind, percussion, jazz, and guard studies. The Director of Bands is Mr. Eloys George, Jr. The Lakes Jazz Band has achieved consecutive straight superior ratings at the district and state levels for over a decade. Aside from continuously receiving distinguished ratings from the Florida Bandmasters Association, HML Bands have achieved Grand Champion status for the past seven consecutive years at band festivals around the continental United States, most notably at Fiesta-val Music Invitationals. The band has also been recognized as National Grand Champions for seven consecutive years. In 2007 the Trojan Band earned superior ratings at the district competition for the seventeenth consecutive year.

'Honor Societies'

Lakes has numerous active honor societies including the National Honor Society (NHS), the Science Honor Society, the Social Studies Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the Spanish Honor Society. The Science Honor Sociery takes part in competitions such as the Fairchild Challenge and the National Ocean Science Bowl against other notable schools in the district and is in the midst of creating a butterfly garden on campus. The Social Studies Honor Society which was formed in the 2006-2007 school year is currently engaged in enhancing awareness of the situation in Darfur and has taken part in several Model United Nations conferences, earning several awards for best position paper in a committee and honorable mention for delegation. The Lakes Mock-Trial team is renowned for having been the district winners for five consecutive years (1991,92,93,94,& 95) and for ultimately being one of the only two teams to win the National High School Mock Trial Championship (1995) in the whole school district; the team was revamped in 2007.

Athletics Department

The Lakes Athletic Department has a notable and long reputation for its competitiveness and achievement, Hence, it is no surprise that Lakes has a total of eleven state championships, and one national championship to its name. These state championships include the 1975 football state championship (and a total of ten appearances at states out of the schools 36 year history) as well as four state championships in baseball (1977,1979,1980,& 1985), one in boys soccer (1978), one in boys golf (1978), one in boys gymnastics (1978), one in boys track (1984), one in boys basketball (1986), one in girls soccer (1993), as well as a national baseball championship in 1985. Lakes was also awarded the prestigious Miami Herald All Sport Award (given to the school with the highest performance in sports) for seven seasons (1977-78,1979-80,1980-81,1982-83,1983-84,1984-85,& 1989-90) as well as the Miami Herald Major Sport Award (1977-78,& 1978-79), the Major Sport Award for girls (1980-81), and the Major Sport Award for boys (1985-86, 1990-91,& 1995-96). Lakes shares a long standing and vicious rivalry with Hialeah High and a less notable one with Barbara Goleman Senior High.
Recent achievements from the 2005-2006 school year include girls waterpolo district runner up (second only to Krop HS) as well as the Boys Football teams status as district runner up in the most competitive district in the state (Class 6A- District 13), and state quarterfinals. Lakes has been the T-Cup victor (the football game held against arch-nemesis Hialeah High) for the better part of the competitions 36 year existence. Football is definitely the mainstay sport at Lakes, with the other sports also being quite popular. The Lakes home stadium is Hendricks stadium in Milander Park (which it shares with Hialeah, Goleman, Miami Springs and American.)
During the 2005 season the school had one of the most sought after QB in the state No. 1 Thaddeus Lewis (who now plays for the Blue Devils of Duke University). During the 2006 season, Lakes once again had one of the most nationally sought after players in RB in No. 5 Armando Allen who committed to play for the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame.

'H-ML Womens Gymnastics'
Sometimes your strength of character is best revealed not when you win, but rather when you lose very close matches to excellent competition that pushes you to do your personal best.
In the late 1970's, H-ML dominated the high school sports world of Miami, in nearly every sport, as few schools have before or since.
When the North Miami Beach Senior High School Chargers during their undefeated glory days under head coach Peter Saponaro -himself an All-American and co-captain of an NCAA Championship Mens team at Penn. State University in the 1960's- had to face the best that other Florida high schools could give, their toughest competition by far came in the form of the orange and blue-clad Trojans.
For years the Trojans were consistently the second-best team in the state of Florida under the tutelage of veteran head coach Don Guntzler.
They were led by the enormously talented and late Dee Leutner, later a proud University of Georgia GymDawg teammate of NMB's Linda Zobler, the tall and graceful Deeanne Fernandez, and the red-haired ball of energy that was Tracey Blake, later a star and Hoosier captain at Indiana University, all of whom consistently made the Miami Herald and Miami News All-Dade County gymnastics team year after year without fail.
H-ML always provided the Chargers with the sort of tough but friendly competition that was usually never settled until the very last competitor had performed, as happened often in the GMAC (county) championship meet, and the 1979 state championship at NMB, the Chargers always emerging bloodied but victorious.
The NMB vs. H-ML gymnastics meets were always well-attended, regardless of the venue, but never more so when they were held at NMBHS, when appreciative evening crowds of about 1,500-2,000 enthusiastic fans were not at all uncommon, and only added to the spirit and tension of a meet between what were clearly the two best teams in the state of Florida, and among the best in the nation, year after year.

School uniforms

Starting in the 2005-2006 school year, Hialeah-Miami Lakes requires school uniforms. Students are allowed to wear polo shirts in the school colors of white, orange and blue as well as class, club and spirit shirts with jeans or khaki pants.
