The name was also used with the establishment of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia in 1979. After a brief return to colonial status as Southern Rhodesia from 1979 to 1980, the country became the independent nation of Zimbabwe in April 1980. The country is landlocked and located in southern Africa. Predominantly white Settler Governments governed the country until 1979, initially as a self governing colony then, after the Unilateral Declaration of Independence as a self-proclaimed sovereign Dominion and latterly a Republic. The colony was named after Cecil John Rhodes, whose British South Africa Company acquired the land in the nineteenth century. The colony gained international recognition of its independence in 1980 as the Republic of Zimbabwe. Before 1964 the name "Rhodesia" referred to the territory of modern Zambia and Zimbabwe. The British government adopted a policy of No Independence Before Majority African Rule (NIBMAR), dictating that colonies with a substantial population of white settlers would not receive independence except under conditions of universal suffrage and majority rule. The European minority Rhodesian Front (RF) government, led by Ian Smith, opposed the policy. The British Empire ruled over the self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia until negotiations between Smith's government and the UK government broke down in 1965. Smith's government declared the country independent from British rule on 11 November 1965 in what became known as UDI (Unilateral Declaration of Independence). Smith sent a telegram notifying British Prime Minister Harold Wilson at precisely 1 p.m. local time (11 a.m. in London) on 11 November, at the precise moment that the UK started its traditional two minutes of silence to mark the end of World War I and honour its war dead. The not-so-hidden message to "kith and kin," as Smith put it, recalled Southern Rhodesia's assistance and allegiance to the UK in its time of need in World War I and II. British High Commissioner John Baines Johnston, who disliked Smith, cleaned out the High Commission building of all official documents and left Rhodesia. Smith gave strict instructions to his government not to harm the High Commission building in any way, much to Johnston's surprise. The international community condemned UDI. The United Nations Security Council authorised the first use of sanctions, targeting Rhodesia at the behest of Britain, beginning in 1965 and lasting until the restoration of British rule in December 1979. The terms of these sanctions forbade most forms of trade or financial exchange with Rhodesia. However, not all members of the international community adhered to the sanctions. South Africa, Portugal, Israel, Iran and some Arab nations helped Rhodesia in various ways. In the case of the U.S., the 1971 Byrd Amendment allowed the importation of chrome, ferrochrome and nickel from Rhodesia.[1] Rhodesia evaded sanctions in the short term but few outsiders invested in Rhodesia after the sanctions. |

![]() | The Festa Della Repubblica Opening Speech The Festa Della Repubblica or Italian National Day. Produced by Alessandro Sorbello http://www.alessandrosorbello.com for the Italian Consulate for Queensland and Northern Territory.Opening speech by Dr Francesco Capecchi, Consul of Italiy for Queensland and Northern Territory. Official reception June 2008 Brisbane QUT Art Musuem. Present The Honarable Grace Grace, Santo Santoro. The "Festa della Repubblica" is the Italian national holiday celebrated on the second day of June. It commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when (by universal suffrage) the Italian population was called to decide what form of government (monarchy or republic) to give to the country after the second world war and the fall of Fascism. After 85 years of monarchy, with 12,717,923 votes for and 10,719,284 votes against, Italy became a Republic, and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled. This is one of the most important Italian national holidays which, like July 14th in France (Storming of the Bastille) and July 4th in the USA (Independence Day), celebrates the birth of the nation. All over the world Italian embassies hold celebrations with Heads of State of the host country. Heads of State from all over the world send congratulations to the President of the Republic. Special official ceremonies take place in Italy. Before the foundation of the Republic, the national holiday was on the first Sunday of June, anniversary of the Statuto (constitution) granted by the King Carlo Alberto of Savoy. History - In June 1948, the first military parade was conducted in via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome. In 1949, after the entry of Italy into the NATO, 10 more parades were conducted in different cities, such as Pordenone, Latina and L'Aquila. In 1950, for the first time, the parade was included in the celebrations for the Republic Day and in 1961, on the hundredth anniversary of the unity, it was also conducted in Turin and Florence, the first capitals of unified Italy. Because of Pope John XXIII's death in 1963, celebrations were postponed on 4 November. In 1965 a group of flags which took part in The Great War paraded to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the entry of Italy into the First World War. These flags, kept in The Vittoriano, were placed in command of Colonel Alberto Li Gobbi who was awarded with a gold medal for valour during the Second World War. The parade was also conducted during the protest of the early 70s. In 1976 it was suspended because of the earthquake in Friuli and it was replaced by a deposition of a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In the meantime, groups of flags which had took part in the War of Liberation and Gonfalons of the cities awarded with gold medals for military valour had been introduced to the parade of 1975. These became permanent elements of 1983-89 parades. The Parade - At present, the ceremony consists of a deposition of a laurel wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, placed inside the Altare della Patria in Rome and of a military parade in the presence of the highest offices of the state. All Armed Forces, Police Forces, the Fire Brigade and the Italian Red Cross, along with some military delegations of the NATO and of the European Union, take part in the parade and in the deposition of the laurel wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The ceremony goes on in the afternoon with the opening to the public of the Palazzo del Quirinale Gardens, official residence of the President of the Italian Republic, and with concerts performed by the band of the Italian Army, Italian Navy, Italian Air Force, Carabinieri, State Police, Guardia di Finanza, Polizia Penitenziaria (Penitentiary Police) and Corpo Forestale dello Stato (State Forestry Department). |

![]() | Grace Grace Opening the Italian Festival Brisbane The Festa Della Repubblica or Italian National Day. Produced by Alessandro Sorbello http://www.alessandrosorbello.com for the Italian Consulate for Queensland and Northern Territory. Dr Francesco Capecchi, Consul of Italiy for Queensland and Northern Territory. Official reception June 2008 Brisbane QUT Art Musuem Introducing The Honarable Grace Grace. Grace Grace is an Australian politician, representing the Australian Labor Party in Brisbane Central since the October 2007 by-election. She was born Ignazia Farfaglia in Brisbane, Queensland, the daughter of an Italian migrant cane cutter. She was an industrial relations advisor in the government of Prime Minister Paul Keating, until 1995 when she was elected as assistant general secretary, and in 2000 the first female general secretary, of the Queensland Council of Unions. QUEENSLAND Council of Unions general secretary Grace Grace is tipped to replace the departing Premier in the electorate he has held for 18 years. Ms Grace, who attained her double name through marriage, became the frontrunner for preselection in Brisbane Central yesterday after ALP state secretary Milton Dick and ministerial adviser Michael Dart withdrew from the race. Peter Beattie's decision to retire as an MP paves the way for a by-election in the safe Labor seat, held by a margin of more than 14 per cent. Ms Grace, who in 2000 became the first female leader of the QCU in its 115-year history, was endorsed for the inner-city seat yesterday by both Mr Beattie and premier-in-waiting Anna Bligh. "There's a lot of good people around," Mr Beattie told ABC Radio. "I understand Grace Grace is putting her name forward." Ms Bligh said she had asked Ms Grace to consider running. "She is someone who lives locally, has a high profile, is a woman, comes from the Italian community and I think has a lot to offer," she said. But Ms Bligh also warned Brisbane Central would not be an easy seat for Labor to retain, given by-elections often attracted a protest vote and the margin built up by Mr Beattie probably reflected his personal following. Mr Dick said winning the seat would be a "tough battle" for Labor. "The by-election is going to be one of the toughest the party has faced, with the popularity of the Premier carrying a huge sway in the electorate until now," he said. Mr Dick said demographics of the seat had changed dramatically in recent years, with high-rise apartments and trendy shops replacing battlers' homes and factories in many inner-city areas, particularly along the Brisbane River. "But obviously we want the seat to remain in government hands so we'll be doing everything we can to try and win it," he said. The northside electorate includes the Brisbane CBD and the inner suburbs of Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Newstead, Spring Hill, Kelvin Grove, Herston and Bowen Hills. Ms Grace, who was unavailable for comment yesterday, was born Grace Farfaglia. Her Italian migrant father worked as a cane cutter in north Queensland before moving to Brisbane, where he worked in a tannery. She has said the suffering he endured after a work accident inspired her to embrace unionism. Ms Grace, whose first job was as a stenographer, has been a union official since 1980. She was an industrial relations adviser in the Keating government before her election as QCU's assistant general secretary in 1995. |
![]() | Israel the Only real bush style democracy! zionist truth 2of3 1947-1949 War While it is widely and correctly reported that the resulting war eventually included five Arab armies, less well known is the fact that throughout this war Zionist forces outnumbered all Arab and Palestinian combatants combined often by a factor of two to three. Also contrary to popular belief, Arab armies did not invade Israel virtually all battles were fought on land that was to have been the Palestinian state. Finally, it is significant to note that the Arab armies entered the conflict only after Zionist forces had committed six massacres, including the grisly massacre of men, women, and children at Deir Yassin. (Future Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, head of one of the Jewish terrorist groups, called this a splendid act of conquest, and stated: As in Deir Yassin, so everywhere, we will attack and smite the enemy. God, God, Thou has chosen us for conquest. Zionist/Israeli forces committed 33 massacres altogether.) By the end of the war Israel had conquered 78 percent of mandatory Palestine; three-quarters of a million Palestinians had been made refugees; over 500 towns and villages had been destroyed; and a new map was drawn up, in which every city, river and hillock received a new, Hebrew name, as all vestiges of the Palestinian culture were to be erased. For many decades Israel denied the existence of this population, Golda Meir once saying: There is no such thing as a Palestinian. 967 War In 1967, Israel conquered still more land. Following the Six Day War, in which Israeli forces launched a highly successful surprise attack on Egypt, Israel occupied the additional 22 percent of Palestine that had eluded it in 1948 the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Since, according to international law it is inadmissible to acquire territory by war, these are occupied territories and do not belong to Israel. It also occupied parts of Egypt (since returned) and Syria (which remain under occupation). Also during the Six-Day War, Israel attacked a US Navy ship, the USS Liberty, killing and injuring over 200 American servicemen. President Lyndon Johnson recalled rescue flights, saying that he did not want to "embarrass an ally." (In 2004 a high-level commission chaired by Admiral Thomas Moorer, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, found this attack to be an act of war against the United States, a fact few news media have reported.) |
