HILARY BARDWELL

'(Hilary) Hilly Bardwell, Lady Kilmarnock', was the first wife of Kingsley Amis and the mother of Martin Amis. After this marriage ended she married, in 1967, the Tibetan specialist and classical scholar D. R. Shackleton Bailey. At one time she ran a fish-and-chip shop at Ann Arbor; Shackleton Bailey was known to help out there occasionally. This marriage ended in 1975. Her third husband was Alastair Boyd, 7th Baron Kilmarnock. After the failure of Amis's second marriage he went to live with Hilly and with Lord Kilmarnock.
