HILARY DU PRé
'Hilary du Pré' (born 1942) is a British flautist and memoirist.
Born in Woking, Surrey, the eldest child of an upper middle-class, cultured family headed by an accountant father and a pianist mother, du Pré revealed a natural affinity for music at an early age, but was overshadowed by the talents of her younger sister Jackie, the famed cellist whose life and career tragically were cut short by multiple sclerosis.
Du Pré is married to conductor Christopher "Kiffer" Finzi, with whom she raised four children. Allegedly with his wife's consent, Finzi had a romantic affair with his ailing sister-in-law, who was exhibiting suicidal behavior as the result of a nervous breakdown. In her 1997 memoir ''A Genius in the Family'', co-written with her brother Piers, du Pré chronicled the schizophrenic relationship, both tortured and deeply loving, she shared with her sister, and claimed she agreed to the affair because she wanted Jackie to experience the stable family life the younger woman envied not having herself. This version of events has been contradicted by a number of sources, including Hilary du Pré's own daughter, who tells of her father's serial adultery and abusive behaviour towards Jaqueline du Pré's vulnerable, emotional state.
''A Genius in the Family'' was adapted for the screen in 1998 under the title ''Hilary and Jackie'', in which the older sister is portrayed by Rachel Griffiths. The film and book have been extensively criticised by Jaqueline du Pré's closest friends and colleagues as a misrepresentation of the lady they knew and loved.
