'Homestead Steel Works', located in Homestead, Pennsylvania, was a rival of the steel company, Carnegie Steel, founded by Andrew Carnegie (an immigrant of Scotland). Carnegie Steel eventually bought Homestead Steel Works, which included an extensive plant served by tributary coal and iron fields, a railway 425 miles long, and a line of lake steamships.
A few remnants of the steel works were not destroyed. They exist today to attract curiosity seekers to the sprawling shopping center which has been constructed on the site. Barges filled with coal pass by on the "Mon", having no reason to stop.
