HOT SPRINGS, SOUTH DAKOTA

'Hot Springs' is a city in Fall River County, South Dakota, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 4,250. It is the county seat of Fall River County. Hot Springs also serves as the administrative center of neighboring Shannon County, which does not have its own county seat.^[1]
Hot Springs is the warmest place in South Dakota with an annual mean temperature of 64F. Some of the attractions in the Hot Springs area are The Mammoth Site which is arguably America’s greatest Ice Age treasure, Evans Plunge and its naturally warm 87 degree spring water, and the town is located less than an hour from Mount Rushmore National Monument. Hot Springs holds the annual Miss South Dakota pageant.
Hot Springs is also the home of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Black Hills Healthcare System - Hot Springs Campus). The Center boasts extensive outpatient treatment, acute hospital care and a 100 bed Domiciliary that houses at PTSD Treatment ward and alcohol and drug treatment facility.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,129 people, 1,704 households, and 962 families residing in the city. The population density was 547.8/km² (1,417.3/mi²). There were 1,900 housing units at an average density of 252.1/km² (652.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.06% White, 0.39% African American, 7.82% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 3.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.91% of the population.
There were 1,704 households out of which 23.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.5% were non-families. 39.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 19.4% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 113.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,079, and the median income for a family was $35,786. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $18,333 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,618. About 8.1% of families and 14.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.9% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.
