'Howard Green Duff' (November 24, 1913 – July 8, 1990) was a radio and stage performer before he began appearing in films in the late 1940s. He played Dashiell Hammett's private eye Sam Spade while a radio actor. Duff starred in ''The Adventures of Sam Spade'' on three different networks - ABC, CBS and NBC - from 1946 to 1950. In 1951 Steve Dunne took over the role of Sam Spade.
Born in Bremerton, Washington, his first film role was as an inmate in ''Brute Force''. Other movies include ''The Naked City'' (1948), ''All My Sons'' (1948), ''Panic in the City'' (1968), ''In Search of America'' (1971), ''A Wedding'' (1978) and ''No Way Out'' (1987). He appeared in many movies with his one-time wife, actress and director Ida Lupino. They separated in 1966 and divorced in 1984.
One of his later films roles was playing Dustin Hoffman's attorney in the academy award winning ''Kramer vs. Kramer'' (1979). In the 1980s, Duff became a familiar face on television appearing on dramas such as ''Flamingo Road'', ''Knots Landing'', and ''Dallas''.
From January 1957 through September 1958, Duff starred with his wife, Ida Lupino, in the CBS comedy ''Mr. Adams and Eve''. They played husband and wife film stars named Howard Adams and Eve Drake in this series. From October 1960 through April 1961, Duff played Willie Dante, owner of the nightclub Dante's Inferno, in the NBC mystery adventure series ''Dante''. From September 1966 through January 1969, Howard Duff played Det. Sgt. Sam Stone in the ABC police drama ''Felony Squad''.
Duff died on July 8, 1990 in Santa Barbara, California from a heart attack at the age of 76, survived by his daughter, Bridget Duff (born April 23, 1952), from his marriage to Ida Lupino, and his second wife Judy Jenkinson.
