HYBLA VALLEY, VIRGINIA
'Hybla Valley' is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 16,721 at the 2000 census.
Located midway between Alexandria and Fort Belvoir along Richmond Highway (U.S. Route 1), Hybla Valley in the early 20th century was an area of mainly dairy farms, with a busy airport and a planned (but never built) zeppelin port. Today it functions as the major retailing center of southeastern Fairfax County's Route 1 corridor. Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is also located here. The area is characterized by a larger-than-average (for the county) amount of low-to-moderate-income housing, including several large mobile home parks and garden apartment complexes. Gum Springs, a historic African-American community founded by a freed slave, forms a large part of Hybla Valley. Eastward, the CDP extends to more affluent neighborhoods including Hollin Hills and Hollin Hall. The CDP is served by the Alexandria Post Office (ZIP codes 22306, 22307 and 22308).

As of the census of 2000, there were 16,721 people, 6,362 households, and 4,211 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,116.7/km² (5,481.7/mi²). There were 6,515 housing units at an average density of 824.7/km² (2,135.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 49.98% White, 28.53% African American, 0.58% Native American, 8.01% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 9.07% from other races, and 3.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.22% of the population.
There were 6,362 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.8% were married couples living together, 16.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.18.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $49,087, and the median income for a family was $57,984. Males had a median income of $34,669 versus $32,103 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,745. About 12.1% of families and 15.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
