In Gujarat 2004 Loksabha election the main fight was between BJP and Congress. Having won 2002 assembly election and buoyed by opinion poll BJP expected to win 20 to 24 seats. However, in a surprise result it could only beg 14 seats ceding remaining 12 seats to Congress. BJP polled 7204915 (47.37 %) of total votes in the state while congress polled 6671926 (43.86%). Although BSP and NCP did not win any seat they polled 1.48 % and 1.16% respectively of the total votes polled.
