INDIAN NATIONAL CRICKET CAPTAINS

This is a 'list of all men, boys and women who have captained an Indian national cricket team' at official international level. India became a full member of the Imperial Cricket Conference (now the International Cricket Council) on 31 May 1926. On 25 June 1932 it became the Test nation after England, Australia, South Africa, the West Indies and New Zealand when they took on England at Lord's. They played only seven Tests, which were all against England, before the Second World War, losing five matches and drawing twice. Their first game against other opposition came in 1947/8 when they played Australia.
The Indian team's greatest successes came in 1983, when they won the Cricket World Cup under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, and in 1999/2000 when they won the Under-19 World Cup under the captaincy of Mohammad Kaif. India's most successful captain in Test cricket is Sourav Ganguly, who has won 21 of his 49 Tests at the helm. Mithali Raj led India to its best result in Women's ODI cricket when the team advanced to the finals of the 2005 Women's Cricket World Cup. Raj is also one of the three women's captains who have led their side to a victory in women's Test cricket, the others being Shantha Rangaswamy and Mamatha Maben.

Records and highlights

★ Raj has led India in the most number of ODI matches (48) followed by Anjum Chopra (22). Raj is listed at #3 on most matches as captain among all nations after Belinda Clark (101) and Clare Connor (66).[16]

★ Raj is the only Indian woman to have scored a century while captaining the team. Her score of 108
[17] against Sri Lanka at National Stadium, Karachi is also the third highest score by an Indian batswoman in ODI cricket.

★ Maben's 6/10 is the fifth best bowling figure in Women's ODI cricket[18] and the feat was achieved in the match where she was the captain of the Indian women's team. Incidentally, Maben's bowling figures are the current world record in women's cricket for the best bowling figures of a captain.
