Plot
''Voyager'' receives a hologram of Reginald Barclay in a datastream from the Pathfinder Project in the Alpha Quadrant, the Starfleet commission which is working on bringing ''Voyager'' home. They will have to go through a geodesic fold at two stars, bringing back to the Alpha Quadrant. Thus, modifications to shields and inoculation to the crew will prevent radiation from seeping inside ''Voyager'' when this happens. He is given the Doctor's mobile emitter so he could supervise in engineering. The Doctor isn't so sure the inoculations will help but the Barclay hologram insists it will work.
Unfortunately, back on Earth, the real Barclay didn't get his hologram to the Delta Quadrant. Twice, he dispatched it but no success. Barclay suspects the Borg or the Romulans were responsible but had no proof and was sent off on vacation. He meets Counselor Deanna Troi, who was sunbathing. He mentions to her that after he sent his hologram, his girlfriend, Leosa left him.
The datastream from ''Voyager'' was intercepted by a Ferengi ship. The crew onboard, heard from the Barclay hologram that their plan was going well and that the Borg nanoprobes will soon arrive.
The Doctor is suspicious of the Barclay hologram and when he invited him for golf, Barclay became very hostile. He confronts Janeway about this. Despite a check, there was nothing wrong.
At Starfleet headquarters, Troi and Barclay question Leosa, who is in fact a dabo girl (Barclay thought she was a teacher). After getting nowhere with Leosa, Troi, using her Betazoid abilities, was able to deduce she was working for a Ferengi.
The Ferengi receive word from the hologram, actually the real Barclay, told them that Janeway had figured out the plot and Voyager had figured out the radiation problem. They plan to blow whatever is on the other side of the fold unless it was closed.
The hologram rendered Seven of Nine unconscious and beamed her into an escape pod. However, ''Voyager'' was able to beam her out of there and deactivated the Barclay hologram. On the other side of the fold, the Ferengi find no nanoprobes, meaning no payment.
As Barclay was working on his new hologram with security features when Troi invites him on a double-date with Commander William Riker and a friend of his.
