Route description

Interstate 155 at the Mackinaw River.

Interstate 155 is a four-lane freeway for its entire length. It runs through rural central Illinois and is surrounded for its whole length by farmland. Some residential development is beginning to take place on the west side of Morton at the northern terminus of I-155, however.
Interstate 155 serves numerous small farm towns in addition to the cities of Morton, Peoria and Lincoln. The largest city directly served by I-155 is Tremont.

History

I-155 gradually replaced a two lane road known as Illinois Route 121. A short freeway portion was constructed in the mid-1970s to replace a bridge over the Mackinac River. In the early 1990s, the portion of Illinois 121 north of Lincoln was replaced by I-155.Carlson, Rich. Illinois Highways Page: Routes 121 thru 140. Last updated April 15, 2005. Illinois had applied for Interstate 155 to be Interstate 37, but the request was rejected by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).Kurumi. Kurumi's 3di Page: x55 3dis. Last updated January 20, 2006. Retrieved June 27, 2006.
Some maps and online map systems (including MapQuest) list I-155 as Route 121. No signs for 121 exist on the new freeway. Furthermore, signs at the Interstate 55, SR-121 intersection say "End 121". Travelers that see 121 on a map or are given directions to use 121 should check to see if I-155 is the correct name.
