INTERSTATE 390

(Redirected from Interstate 390 (New York))

'Interstate 390' (abbreviated 'I-390') is a long north-south auxiliary Interstate Highway located entirely in the state of New York. The southern terminus of the route is at the Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86/NY 17) in the town of Avoca. The northern terminus is at Interstate 490 (the Western Expressway) in Rochester. North of I-490, the expressway continues as New York State Route 390 to the Lake Ontario State Parkway in Greece. I-390 connects to its parent, Interstate 90 (the New York State Thruway), in Henrietta, a southern suburb of Rochester. The route is known as the 'Genesee Expressway' from Avoca to Interstate 590 in Brighton, where it becomes part of the Rochester Outer Loop.
I-390 is one of the longest auxiliary interstates in the Interstate Highway System. In addition to servicing Rochester, I-390 serves as an important connecting route between the Buffalo and Rochester metropolitan areas and Corning and the rest of the southern tier of New York. I-390 effectively replaced U.S. Route 15 and parallels New York State Route 15, US 15's successor north of Corning, in upstate New York.

Portions of I-390 between Wayland and Dansville were constructed in 1966;[3] however, construction on the entire segment continued into the following year.[4] Upon opening in the late 1960s, the freeway was originally designated as 'New York State Route 401'.[5] It later became part of New York State Route 245 before being designated as I-390 in 1974.2
I-390 was extended southeast from Wayland to I-86/NY 17 in Avoca in 1976. In 1980, I-390 was extended northwest from Dansville to NY 36 near Groveland. I-390 also opened between U.S. Route 20A near Lakeville and Hylan Drive in Henrietta.3 Additionally, New York State Route 47, which was designated along what is now I-390 from NY 383 north to I-490 in Rochester, was decommissioned on March 18, 1980.[6][5] The segment of NY 47 from NY 383 to I-490 was redesignated as I-390.
In 1981, the remainder of I-390 in Monroe County, including the I-390/I-590 interchange, was completed, linking the US 20A-Hylan Drive segment to the former NY 47 expressway on the fringe of Rochester. The final gap in the expressway, from NY 36 to US 20A in Livingston County, opened in 1982.3
