INTERSTATE 43

'Interstate 43' (abbreviated 'I-43') is an intrastate interstate highway located entirely within the state of Wisconsin, United States. Its southern terminus is at an intersection with Interstate 39, Interstate 90 and Wisconsin Highway 81 in Beloit, Wisconsin; its northern terminus is in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at an intersection with U.S. Highway 41and U.S. Highway 141.
I-43 north of Milwaukee was originally planned as a northern section of Interstate 57; it would not have run concurrently with Interstate 94 in between.

From its southern terminus, I-43 heads northeast to Milwaukee, passing Delavan, Elkhorn and East Troy on the way to Milwaukee. In Milwaukee, the route follows I-894 east and I-94 north (marked west) into downtown. The route leaves I-94 and continues northward at the Marquette Interchange alongside Lake Michigan, passing Port Washington, Sheboygan and Manitowoc before ending north of Green Bay at US 41/US 141.
I-43 provides travelers with indirect access to Door County, a popular tourism area during the summer months. I-43 also provides travelers with indirect access to the Lake Express and S.S. Badger car ferries in Milwaukee and Manitowoc, respectively. The southern portion of I-43 is an important link to Interstate 39, thereby connecting Milwaukee with points southwest, such as Iowa and Missouri, without requiring travel through Chicago.

History

The highway route that is now I-43 existed for several years prior to its designation as an Interstate highway. The section from its southern terminus to its intersection with I-894 in Milwaukee was originally designated Wisconsin STH-15.^[2] The section running from Interstate 94 and Interstate 794 in Milwaukee to the northern terminus was originally designated US 141. The latter section was the first designated as I-43. I-43 between Interstate 894 and the southern terminus is historically known as the "Rock Freeway," representing the freeway's link between Milwaukee and Rock County.
