INTERSTATE 481

'Interstate 481' (abbreviated 'I-481') is a spur of Interstate 81 to the east of
Syracuse, New York. It connects with I-81 in the city's southern end and again in the suburb of North Syracuse. It travels through the Syracuse suburbs of Jamesville and DeWitt along the way. After crossing I-81 in North Syracuse, I-481 continues northwest as NY 481 to the cities of Fulton and Oswego, terminating at the intersection with NY 104.
I-481 does not appear to parallel or replace any "older" former routes, in the same manner many 2-digit Interstates usually run intertwined with an older U.S. route. However, the state portion between Fulton and Oswego follows the course of former NY 57. (The nearby Oswego County route 57 follows an older path of NY 57.)
It is possible that I-481 will be replaced by its parent, I-81. The city of Syracuse has discussed removing the aging elevated portion of I-81 through downtown Syracuse before it needs major repair and re-routing I-81 onto I-481. It is unclear whether this will occur or if this is merely speculation.
The route is part of the Veterans Memorial Highway, which extends northward onto NY 481.
