INTERSTATE 895 (DELAWARE)

'Interstate 895' was an auxiliary route of Interstate 95 located in Wilmington, Delaware. It was created in 1978 along the alignment of I-95 between Newport and Claymont when a bypass to the east of Wilmington was opened. I-95 was moved to the the bypass in order to allow for construction on the Wilmington Viaduct, in which traffic would be reduced to two lanes. The switch was intended to divert through traffic away from downtown Wilmington during the construction. When the construction was completed in 1982, I-95 was moved back to its alignment through Wilmington, replacing I-895, and the bypass was designated as Interstate 495.
