History
Highway 44 was designated as part of the 1969 "Great Renumbering" of Iowa's state highways. Its designation created a continuous route number from Portsmouth to Grimes.[3]
Current status/future plans
A stretch of Highway 44 in Guthrie County was rehabilitated in 2006. A segment near Grimes is scheduled for repaving in 2008. [4]
Notes
★ Highway 44's exit from Highway 141 is signed for Grimes and Saylorville Lake, but Highway 44 doesn't go to the lake. An unsigned Polk County road which continues east from Highway 44 at the interchange does serve the lake, however.[5]
