The 'Irish Recorded Music Association' (IRMA) is the Irish record industry association. They are a not-for-profit association set up by record companies and companies carrying on associated trades in the Republic of Ireland, to provide members with a convenient means to discuss matters of common interest between themselves and to provide a medium to represent the Irish record industry in negotiations with Government Departments and other interested parties. Generally, it operates to promote and protect the welfare and interests of the Irish record industry.
Specifically, IRMA is involved in the following activities: -

★ Lobbying at industry, political, civil service, Irish Government and EU levels to protect and enhance the interest of member companies.

★ Collecting and compiling national statistics to reflect the importance to Ireland of the music industry.

★ Organising the showcase event of the year for the industry, "The IRMA Honours".

★ Fighting piracy in its every form in Ireland.

★ Managing the shareholding in the Irish chart company (ChartTrack) ensuring that the charts are a reasonable reflection of sales and that members are supplied with a copy of same every Friday.

★ Acting as the voice of the industry at all times
The IRMA is also heavily involved in combating piracy and illegal music filesharing in Ireland. On April 12, 2005 the asscociation began to take legal action against "serial filesharers" in Ireland who illegally distribute music on the internet. On November 15, 2005 the IRMA began "Phase II" of its plan to battle filesharing.
The association also manages and is responsible for the shareholding in the Irish chart company, ChartTrack. Its job is to ensure that the Irish music and video charts are a reasonable reflection of sales.
Only Irish companies can become members of the IRMA. All members pay a yearly fee depending on how large their company is. Currently, the IRMA has 51 member companies.

The IRMA trust


In 1997 the IRMA set up a trust, with Phonographic Performance (Ireland) Limited, with the aim to enhance the opportunities for young people who want to pursue a career in music. The trusts main initiative is the Instrument Bank, which provides music instruments to young people, particularly to young people who live in disadvantaged communities throughout Ireland.
