IRON COUNTY, WISCONSIN

'Iron County' is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population was 6,861. Its county seat is Hurley⁶.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,381 km² (919 mi²). 1,961 km² (757 mi²) of it is land and 420 km² (162 mi²) of it (17.62%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there were 6,861 people, 3,083 households, and 1,960 families residing in the county. The population density was 4/km² (9/mi²). There were 5,706 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.28% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 20.9% were of German, 18.6% Italian, 15.2% Finnish, 9.3% Polish and 6.4% Irish ancestry.
There were 3,083 households out of which 22.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% were married couples living together, 7.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.40% were non-families. 32.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.74.
In the county, the population was spread out with 19.40% under the age of 18, 5.90% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 23.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.80 males.
