'Isabella of Castile' (
1283 -
1328) was the first
Queen consort of
James II of Aragon and the second wife of
John III, Duke of Brittany.
Family
Isabella was the eldest daughter of
Sancho IV of Castile and
María de Molina.
Her paternal grandparents were
Alfonso X of Castile and
Violant of Aragon. Her maternal grandparents were
Alfonso of Molina and Mayor Alonso de Meneses.
Alfonso X was a son of
Ferdinand III of Castile and
Beatriz of Swabia. Alfonso of Molina was a son of
Alfonso IX of León and
Berenguela of Castile.
Ferdinand III was another son of Alfonso IX and Berenguela of Castile. Beatriz was a daughter of
Philip of Swabia and
Irene Angelina.
Marriages
On
1 December,
1291, Isabella married
James II of Aragon in the city of
Soria. The bride was only eight years old and the groom twenty-four. The marriage was never consummated.
Sancho IV died on
25 April,
1295. James chose to change his alliances and take advantage of the turmoil inside Castile. He had their wedding annuled and proceeded to marry
Blanche of Anjou, second daughter of
Charles II of Naples and
Maria Arpad of Hungary.
Isabella remained unwed for about a decade. In
1310, she married her second husband
John III, Duke of Brittany. There were no children from this marriage.
