JACKSON TOWNSHIP, STARK COUNTY, OHIO

'Jackson Township' is one of the seventeen townships of Stark County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 37,744 people in the township, 37,484 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township.[1]

Geography


Located in the northwestern part of the county, it borders the following townships and cities:

Green - north

Lake Township - northeast corner

Plain Township - east

Canton Township - southeast corner

Perry Township - south

Tuscarawas Township - southwest corner

Lawrence Township - west

New Franklin - northwest corner
Two municipalities are located in Jackson Township: a small part of the city of Massillon in the southwest, and the village of Hills and Dales in the southeast.

It is one of thirty-seven Jackson Townships statewide.

Economy


The township's economy is strong, providing jobs to members in various neighboring communities.
The township is home to a thriving retail market. Westfield Belden Village, The Strip, and its surrounding retail outlets provide residents with a variety of choice in shopping and dining.

Government


The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township clerk, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the clerkship or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees. Currently, the board is composed of president Steven Meeks and members William Burger and John Pizzino.[2]
The township's motto is "We make things happen."[3]

Education


Public education in Jackson is provided by Jackson Local Schools, of which Cheryl Haschak is the superintendent. This district is made up of four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The high school has recently finished a new addition, which the students moved into in January of 2007. There is still further construction in other parts of the building.
The district was rated excellent by the state of Ohio for the 2005-2006 schoolyear.[4]
