He was born 'James Clifton Lane', and changed his surname to 'of Mar' in 1959 on being recognised as Heir Presumptive of Lionel Erskine-Young, 28th Earl of Mar, his first cousin once removed (both he and the 28th Earl were descended from a sister of John Goodeve-Erskine, 26th Earl of Mar), and from then was known as 'Master of Mar'. He succeeded as 29th Earl in 1965.
His only son, David of Mar, Lord Garioch, having died young in 1967, on his death he was succeeded by his daughter, Margaret of Mar, Mistress of Mar.
