History

Cricket has a surprisingly long history in Japan with club cricket dating back to at least the start of the 20th century. In October 1909, H.R. Nicholl took 10 for 29 for Kobe against Yokohama.
The Japan Cricket Association became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council in 1989. [1]. Their first high-level international engagement came in the 1996 ACC Trophy. They played in the first three ACC Trophy's but they then were moved by the ICC to the East-Asia Pacific region.
Their first tournament in this region was in the East-Asia Pacific Challenge, which they hosted in 2004. They came third in the tournament, missing out on a chance to qualify for the 2005 ICC Trophy, and the 2007 World Cup.
2005 went down as an important year for Japanese cricket. They were promoted to associate membership of the ICC in June [2], and they got their first win in an international tournament, winning the ICC EAP Cricket Cup by six runs over the Cook Islands in Vanuatu. As a result, the Japanese team advanced to the 2006 ICC EAP Cricket Trophy as part of the World Cup qualifying system. Japanese cricket was even the subject of a report on the BBC news in the United Kingdom.
2006 saw Japan compete in the ICC EAP Cricket Trophy against The Cook Islands and Fiji, with the teams vying for the EAP spot in Division 3 of the ICC World Cricket League as part of the 2011 World Cup qualifying system.
Despite performing well in winning the 2005 EAP Cricket Cup, the Japanese lost three of its four matches in the tournament. Their only victory came over the Cooks in a rain-shortened match decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method. Japan was unable to defeat the Cook Islands a second time, however, when they fell 26 runs short of 168 in their chase during the tournament's final game. The team was unable to stop Fiji, losing by 8 wickets in their first match and, in the second, barely reaching reaching half Fiji's run total before going all out in 41 overs.
Munir Ahmad reached the half century mark, scoring 53 in the opener against Fiji, and Gavin Beath led the Japanese with an 11-wicket haul over the four tournament matches.
