'Jean-Claude Carrière' (born September 19, 1931 in Colombières-sur-Orb, Hérault, France) is a screenwriter and actor. He was a frequent collaborator with Luis Buñuel. He is president of La Fémis.
His collaboration with Buñuel began with the film ''Diary of a Chambermaid'', for which he co-wrote the screenplay (with Buñuel) and also played the part of a village priest. He and the director would collaborate on the scripts of all Buñuel's later films, including ''Belle de Jour'', ''The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie'', ''The Phantom of Liberty'', ''That Obscure Object of Desire'', and ''The Milky Way''.
He also wrote ''The Return of Martin Guerre'', ''The Unbearable Lightness of Being'', ''Valmont'', ''The Bengali Night'', and ''Chinese Box'', and co-wrote ''Max, Mon Amour'' with director Nagisa Oshima. He also collaborated with Peter Brook on a 9-hour stage version of the ancient Sanskrit epic, ''The Mahabharata'', and a five-hour film version.
