Career

Bullock became a notable entertainment figure in the 1980s when he co-starred on ''Too Close for Comfort'', and was a regular "square" on John Davidson's updated version of ''Hollywood Squares'' (1986-89). He later became a regular on ''ALF'' (from 1989-1990 as Neal Tanner).
After the sitcom went off the air, Bullock remained active with theatre, TV, and film work. He briefly hosted a syndicated talk show with ex-televangelist, Tammy Faye Messner. The ''Jim J. and Tammy Faye Show'' debuted in 1996, but Messner exited the program a few months later following a cancer diagnosis. Bullock continued with new co-host Ann Abernathy, and the show became ''The Jim J. and Ann Show'' until it was cancelled soon after.
Bullock was the voice of ''Queer Duck'' in the animated series of cartoons of the same name which have appeared on both the Internet and the TV channel Showtime. In 2000, Bullock was a regular panelist on the revival of ''I've Got a Secret''. Bullock currently is on the national tour of the Broadway production ''Hairspray'' playing Wilbur Turnblad. In addition, Bullock played the always tired "Prince Valium" in the 1987 Mel Brooks movie, ''Spaceballs''.
Bullock has a recurring role as Mr. Monroe, a teacher at the fictional James K. Polk Middle School on the Nickelodeon live action sitcom ''Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide''.

Personal life

Until 1995, Bullock avoided discussing his homosexuality. He had even sent out engagement notices/photos of himself with an attractive brunette woman during the 1985-1986 era. He subsequently admitted that the girl was just a friend, and he was "bearding" himself. The characters he plays are often quirky, or have an effeminate manner.
He was diagnosed as being HIV positive [2] in 1985 and is known as a longtime survivor of the virus. Not until nearly a decade later, however, did he announce that he is homosexual and HIV positive.
Bullock was linked romantically to John Casey (d. 1996, AIDS)[3]
