'James "Jimmy" Brooks' is a fictional character in the TV series , portrayed by Aubrey Graham. He is seen as the school jock. He also comes from a wealthy family, as he is shown with many high-end gifts. Despite this, Jimmy is one of the more open-minded students of Degrassi.
Season 1
Dating Ashley
Jimmy's first relationship is shown to be with Ashley Kerwin, with whom he almost had sex. A little while later, Ashley was beginning to get tired of Jimmy always being around her and planned to break up with him on his birthday. She delayed it until the end of grade eight when she took E, cheated on him with Sean, and revealed everything she thought about their relationship, which left Jimmy broken-hearted and angry with her. The following morning, Ashley was no longer high and she felt terrible for what she did to Jimmy. However, Spinner arrived at her house to relay that Jimmy said that it was over and he didn't want her to call him anymore.
Taking Ritalin
Jimmy was determined to be the star on the school basketball team. He convinced his best friend Spinner to give him a pill of ritalin so he would have enough energy to play at his best. In doing so, Jimmy had too much energy and ended up getting cut from the team because he was too rough with the other players, mainly Sean. Spinner also gets into trouble for not taking his ritalin and acting a "fool." He gets sent to the principal's office.
Season 2
Truth with Spinner
After Spinner deals with the embarrassment of his odor problems, he makes Jimmy promise to always tell the truth, no matter what. This causes them to begin to over criticize each other. It also causes Jimmy to first offend (and later be thanked by) Ashley for saying her poems are trying too hard to be poetic.
Restarting then ending it with Ashley
Ashley was depressed after losing Jimmy and all of her friends the previous year. When Ashley reconnected with Paige, Terri, Hazel and the rest of the gang, she and Jimmy tried dating again. However, when Ashley senses that Jimmy wants her to change her new goth look and go back to her old style, she breaks up with him for not accepting her for who she is.
Spinner and the Jimmy Feud
Spinner was Jimmy's best friend until Spinner got jealous of all the new stuff that his father always gave him. So when he got a new MP3 player, Spinner couldn't take it and decided to steal and sell it. This caused a feud between the two that wasn't settled until the beginning of the third season.
Season 3
Dealing with Marco's Homosexuality
When Marco revealed his homosexuality to Spinner, who angrily and spitefully revealed it to other students, Jimmy surprisingly chose to support Marco and to be his friend. He also helped him recover from a hate crime. After Marco was attacked by a group of homophobes, a furious Jimmy scolded Spinner for being so insensitive the following day.
Dating Hazel
Jimmy's friendship with Hazel turned into a romance when they had to attend Saturday detention. It was the same Saturday detention that united Sean and Ellie as a couple. When Jimmy dares Hazel to kiss Toby he regrets it, and then he kisses her to make it up to her. After that, they're always seen as a couple.
Season 4
Befriending Rick
Once Rick, the boy everyone at Degrassi hated, was back at Degrassi, Jimmy would tease and bully him like everyone else. But after Jimmy was put on an academic team with Rick, he started to befriend him more, along with Emma and Toby. He began to defend Rick from everyone.
Getting Shot
Eventually, Jimmy began to feel bad for Rick being the object of everyone's torment and genuinely began to reach out to him, and they eventually became friends. Toby and Emma also made peace with Rick and accepted him as a friend. It all came crashing down on him however when he was humiliated on television competing in the game show Whack Your Brain by a cruel prank set up by Jay, Alex, and Spinner where he had yellow paint and chicken feathers dumped all over him. He is further hurt when Emma rebuffs his advances, mistaking her comfort for a romantic overture. He leaves school after this, but returns later armed with a gun intending to take vengeance. Paige ran into him in the hallways and might well have been his first victim, but Rick was surprised when she denounced the prank, saying it was "sickening" and "childish." Rick apologized for hurting Terri, and Paige accepted it. It also turned out that Jimmy, Toby, and Emma had denounced the prank as well. Pulling himself together, Rick cleaned himself up in the bathroom. Jay and Spinner, realizing that Rick is in one of the stalls, pretend that Jimmy set up everything, adding that Jimmy joined the team to trick Rick into a false sense of security, and that Jimmy convinced Rick to play the sudden death round of the game. Rick goes to Jimmy and pulls out a handgun. Jimmy tries to run and is shot in the back. Rick tried to kill Emma as well, but got into a struggle with Sean over the gun. Rick died when it accidentally discharged in the struggle.
Hate for Spinner
After returning to school in a wheelchair, Jimmy learned that his best friend Spinner was the one who framed him for the prank on Rick, which led Rick to shoot Jimmy. Jimmy then disowns Spinner as his friend, along with the rest of Degrassi. In one scene, Jimmy is playing basketball and tries to shoot a lay-up but drops the ball and it rolls away. Spinner then walks in and they begin talking. Jimmy yells at Spinner at how mad he is at the shooting and not being able to walk. Spinner covers his own face with his hands and begins to cry slightly, but holds it in and confesses to the prank and how he and Jay framed Jimmy. Later, after everyone tries to get him to leave he gets drunk and goes to Craig's place, where the gang was hanging out at. That doesn't go too well, he tries to drive drunk. When Craig and everyone tries to stop him. he ends up going anyway but stops as Jimmy (in a wheelchair) positions himself in front of the car. They argue as Spinner demands hims to get out of the way. An angry Jimmy tells him to go drive of a cliff because he doesn't care and that he's already dead to him. Spinner gives the keys to Craig and begins to cry.
Season 5
Trying to Return to Sports
Now in a wheelchair, Jimmy tries to return to the world of sports by playing wheelchair basketball. But after he begins to befriend and fall for Ellie, Jimmy realizes that the world of sports is over for him, and he starts to pursue art.
Feelings for Ellie
After spending a lot of time with Ellie, Jimmy finds himself falling for her; even though he is still with Hazel. This draws Jimmy in two directions. But when Hazel realizes how much time Jimmy spends with Ellie, she feels a little threatened. After Hazel sees the mural that Jimmy painted and dedicated to Ellie, Hazel angrily throws half a can of paint at him and storms off. Jimmy follows her, they get into a huge argument, and then a hurt Hazel breaks up with him. And at the end of the school year, Jimmy approaches Ellie about his feelings. Ellie tells him she is sorry and that she doesn't feel the same way. Although Ellie never admitts it to Jimmy, it was obvious that she couldn't even begin to have feelings for him because Craig was on her mind, on whom she has developed a crush on over the previous summer.
End of Grade 12
From being out of school so much due to injuries from the shooting, Jimmy failed his grade 12 year and is stuck behind another year to finish high school. During the graduation ceremony, he also takes this time to rekindle his friendship with Spinner, whom he has now forgiven. After Ashley Kerwin comes back in town, the chemistry between her and Jimmy starts to brew again.
Season 6
Staying a virgin
After Ashley's return from England, Jimmy and Ashley see old love in each other. However, after attempting to take a step forward with sexual relations, Jimmy realizes that his physical damage has caused him to have erectile dysfunction. This frustrates Jimmy to the point that he says he no longer wants to see Ashley. Despite this, Ashley says she still wants to be with him, and find other ways to show each other love.
Jimmy's Dad Troubles
Jimmy and Spinner go into a t-shirt business. While the venture is surprisingly successful, and Spinner is convinced they will make millions, Jimmy knows that the more he gets involved, the more he realizes the t-shirt business is about him rebelling towards his dad. Jimmy then realizes that although he's tried to fix things up with his dad before he really needs to get the message this time as he can't keep living like this. Jimmy decides to end the business, and then is robbed by two boys. Spinner walks in on the burglary and jumps to Jimmy's defense. One of the boys escapes with the money they've made, but Spinner ignores him to save his best friend. Spinner takes the other boy down easily and holds him while Jimmy calls the police. The incident further cements Jimmy's restored friendship with Spinner. So much so that Jimmy compliments the way he caught the other robber, comparing him to Jack Bauer of 24. After the robbery, Jimmy decides to keep the business going and he and Spinner hire Paige as their manager later in the season.
Season 7
In a recent promo for Season 7 seen on The N, Jimmy and Spinner are seen arguing with each other intensely, implying their friendship may be in danger again. Also, Anya, a new character from the Lakehurst is seen flirting with Jimmy.
