JOCK RIVER

The 'Jock River', often referred to affectionately by local residents as 'The Mighty Jock', is a tributary of the Rideau River, named after Jacques, a man who drowned in it in the early 19th century. At one time, it was known as the 'Goodwood River'. It originates south of Franktown, Ontario, in the Goodwood Marsh, and follows a winding path 72 kilometers (45 miles) east to empty into the Rideau River north of Manotick, in Ottawa, Ontario. The river flows through the town of Richmond. The Jock River watershed drains 551 square kilometers of land.
The River is supported by a community-vounteer organization known as the ''Friends of the Jock River''.

For one weekend each spring, the popular Annual Jock River Canoe Race is held between Munster Road and the town of Richmond, covering 12.5 km (8 miles) of the river mostly through the Richmond Fen. The race, held since 1985, has grown to include now many classes of competition, such as solo and tandem canoeing and kayaking, recreational, mixed, and family.
The race is usually held in early spring to take advantage of the high water level. The race course has a few sections of Class I whitewater.
