'Joe Barrett' was a very successful Gaelic footballer from County Kerry in Ireland in the 1920s.
Joe won six All-Ireland senior football finals medals with Kerry in 1924, 1926 and the 4-in-row teams of 1929 to 1932, when he was also captain. He was one of the first GAA superstars and considered the best fullback of all time. He is one of only six men to twice captain a winning team.
Other achievements include National Football League medals, Railway Cup medals. He played his club football with Austin Stacks.
Joe Barrett had also been a member of the Irish Republican Army during the Irish War of Independence in 1921. His son, writer 'JJ Barrett' who also won an All-Ireland medal for Kerry in 1962 wrote ''In the name of the Game'' about how his father and other footballers such as John Joe Sheehy and Con Brosnan were joined by their love of Gaelic football but took opposite sides in the Civil War.
