JOHN BROWN PUBLISHING
'John Brown Publishing' is a British magazine publisher now known simply as ' John Brown'.
The company was founded by John following a period during which he ran Virgin Books. When the business was sold, John negotiated a termination package which included the rights to ''Viz'', a Newcastle-based comic in which Virgin saw little value, but whose huge success under John Brown was to propel his company.
Between 1985 and 2000 it operated in both the consumer and contract publishing markets, with a stable including ''Viz'' and ''Fortean Times'' on the consumer side, and customer titles including Virgin Atlantic's ''Hot Air'' magazine and IKEA's ''Room'' magazine. Many of the consumer titles reflected John's own idiosyncratic tastes, such as Bizarre magazine. In 2000, the company sold its consumer titles and subsequently merged with Citrus Publishing to form John Brown Citrus Publishing, by 2005 the UK's largest customer publishing house, a position which it consolidated when it won (from Redwood Publishing) the UK's largest contract publishing title, for Sky television.
Founder John Brown sold the company to its management team lead by CEO Andrew Hirsch (formerly of Pearl & Dean) in 2004, and the company was rebranded as John Brown in the summer of 2006. In 2007, the company purchased Code London, a catalogue publishing business, to broaden its publishing capability.
