School of Law

John F. Kennedy University School of Law offers a four-year, part-time Juris Doctor. Beginning in Fall 2007, the law school will also offer a California Bar approved full-time program. The school is accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California, but does not have or currently seek accreditation by the American Bar Association. It is the only accredited law school in Contra Costa County, and one of only two such schools in California's East Bay.
The School of Law and the law student editorial staff publish the John F. Kennedy University Law Review.
The school maintains a law library of approximately 35,000 volumes and 1,600 periodicals, substantially larger than at most Committee of Bar Examiners-accredited schools. The library is frequently used by members of the surrounding legal community.
The school also runs the JFKU Elder Law Clinic. The clinic, opened in September 2005, provides the elderly with free legal assistance to deal with financial abuse or exploitation.
The school regularly sponsors educational events open to the public. Recent events have included a panel on domestic surveillance and presidential war powers; a discussion with The Honorable Thelton Henderson and screening of his biography, and a panel discussion on the constitutionality of the California High School Exit Exam.
Department of Museum Studies

John F. Kennedy University is home to one of the nation's oldest museum studies programs, founded in 1974 by Deborah Kirschman. In 2004, the department re-located its library, faculty offices and classrooms to the university's Berkeley campus. It offers coursework that leads to a certificate or a master's degree in museum studies, with specializations in museum education and interpretation; collections management; and administration. Graduates go on to positions as educators, curators, collections managers, directors, etc. in museums and cultural centers around the nation. The department regularly sponsors lectures, workshops and other events for museum professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area and works with many Bay Area museums including the Oakland Museum of California, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Bay Area Discovery Museum and Chabot Space and Science Center to train future museum professionals.
