Born at
Oundle,
Northamptonshire,
England, Whitwell married
Anna Maria Schutz in 1748. The
Barony of Howard de Walden was called out of
abeyance in his favor on
August 3,
1784, after which he changed his name to 'John Griffin Griffin'. He was additionally created 1st
Baron Braybrooke in 1788. He was made a
field marshal on
July 30,
1796. Among others, he had commanded the 1st Horse Grenadier Guards (a
cavalry regiment). He died at
Audley End.
