![]() | John McCain in Bed With the Believers John McCain’s personal devotion to Christianity has been a rocky one. In his biography in the 2007 edition of the Congressional Directory lists his faith as Episcopalian. He attended Episcopalian highschool and was raised in the church from an early age. Suffice it to say, until recent times, there has been no reason to doubt which church he belongs to. The question of which church he subscribes to came about in his “No Surrender” tour while campaigning in S. Carolina. He said: "I was raised in an Episcopal church and attended high school at a high school called Episcopal High School. I have attended North Phoenix Baptist Church for many years, and the most important thing is that I'm a Christian.” So which is it? He later said that Sunday to Associated Press, conveniently enough, in response to questioning of where he sits with the Episcopalian church: “It plays a role in my life. By the way, I'm not Episcopalian. I'm Baptist." Obviously I wouldn’t expect anything “tough” from a politician who’s trying to scratch up votes any way he can. This is the common practice of presidential candidates: appear as likable and as “like me” as possible. But does any of this feel right? Isn’t this supposed to be a major event in one’s life like changing teams or party affiliation? This speaks to the heart of what I would like all of my Christian viewers to notice. Why is it that this fact is not engendering anger or resentment of the deepest kind in Episcopalians across the nation? They certainly had a problem when homosexual clergy used their facilities for sanctioned weddings and other rites. Where is the Archbishop of Canerbury in this issue? Why hasn’t Rowan Williams administered his “holy” office in expressing distain for the actions of one of its key members? For my the answer is simple. As Christopher Hitchens often mentions, the “See of Canterbury” or “Anglican Communion not only call themselves a flock but they look rather sheep-like.” The holy Church of England is no longer the institution is was when Henry VIII made it a church. It no longer has any effect on the actions of its membership. I submit to you that this support my ongoing thesis in at least two ways. First, the common man is bright enough to know truth when it is adequately explained to him. The Anglican Communion, especially in the US, has suffered a harrowing blow of modernity. Its members don’t listen to their prime leader when he suggests the adoption of Sh’aria into common law. They don’t care when he suggests, as John Haggee or Jerry Falwell, that Katrina came as a result of sin. I submit to you that this is so for the simple reason that these truths are apparently, conspicuously, and obviously false. What need of the common man is met with such pronouncements? Second, I submit that adherence always stands in positive correlation with truth, always. We don’t have a choice but to administer penicillin for the fight against disease. The truth of cell-wall inhibition in bacteria caused by this fungus is too simple and useful to be ignored. The common man knows this. John McCain is not suffering any sort of deficient support simply because the people know that the Bible is itself deficient in its claim to “one church, one Lord, and one baptism.” Not that they know of this scripture specifically. I don’t want anyone to understand me that way. But the notion that one church has all truth or is adequate generally is intuitively false. One doesn’t need the bible for such an assumption. |

If you have any concerns about the videos post feedback on either my messenger or FOX Attacks blog! Part I: If MSNBC Is In the Tank for Obama, Then What Is FOX News? This feud with MSNBC and FOX News has reached new levels. Keith Olbermann and Bill O'Reilly have embroiled in a feud for over five years now, and now the presidents of General Electric and NewsCorporation are now involved. This feud started with Keith Olbermann nominated Bill O'Reilly, 20th Century Fox president Roger Ailes and other FOX News personalities as his "World's Worst Person" for their controversial or contradictable statements. Bill O'Reilly then began his "Patriots and Pinheads" and labeled NBC News president Steve Capus and GE president Jeffery Immelt, "pinheads" in response. This feud has embattled both networks and now viewers are noticing. To make matters worse, Senator Hillary Clinton and Ed Gillespie, council to President Bush express their views on MSNBC and NBC News in general. So I offer you an honest opinion: If FOX News claims that NBC News is in the "tank" for Obama, then why was FOX News in the "tank" for Bush (and now McCain)? The O'Reilly Factor covers the daily stories and promotes a "no spin" thought to today's leading politicians. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, where he grew up herding goats with his own father, who was a domestic servant to the British. Barack's mother, Ann Dunham, grew up in small-town Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs during the Depression, and then signed up for World War II after Pearl Harbor, where he marched across Europe in Patton's army. Her mother went to work on a bomber assembly line, and after the war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through the Federal Housing Program, and moved west to Hawaii. It was there, at the University of Hawaii, where Barack's parents met. His mother was a student there, and his father had won a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and pursue his dreams in America. Barack's father eventually returned to Kenya, and Barack grew up with his mother in Hawaii, and for a few years in Indonesia. Later, he moved to New York, where he graduated from Columbia University in 1983. It has been the rich and varied experiences of Barack Obama's life - growing up in different places with people who had differing ideas - that have animated his political journey. Amid the partisanship and bickering of today's public debate, he still believes in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose - a politics that puts solving the challenges of everyday Americans ahead of partisan calculation and political gain. In the Illinois State Senate, this meant working with both Democrats and Republicans to help working families get ahead by creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts to families across the state. He also pushed through an expansion of early childhood education, and after a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases. In the U.S. Senate, he has focused on tackling the challenges of a globalized, 21st century world with fresh thinking and a politics that no longer settles for the lowest common denominator. His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent. He has also been the lead voice in championing ethics reform that would root out Jack Abramoff-style corruption in Congress. As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. Recognizing the terrorist threat posed by weapons of mass destruction, he traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world. And knowing the threat we face to our economy and our security from America's addiction to oil, he's working to bring auto companies, unions, farmers, businesses and politicians of both parties together to promote the greater use of alternative fuels and higher fuel standards in our cars. Whether it's the poverty exposed by Katrina, the genocide in Darfur, or the role of faith in our politics, Barack Obama continues to speak out on the issues that will define America in the 21st century. But above all his accomplishments and experiences, he is most proud and grateful for his family. His wife, Michelle, and his two daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6, live on Chicago's South Side. - LEGAL & BUSINESS CONTACT: http://SamHarris.com © All videos property of Sam Harris |
![]() | Dennis Kucinich: "You Can't Secure Our Nation With LIES!" Dennis Kucinich, the liberal Ohio politician who made two failed White House campaigns, fought Tuesday in the Democratic primary to keep his seat against the toughest, best-financed challenger in his 12-year congressional career. Although the presidential primary commanded most of the nation's attention, Kucinich's race was the best known congressional contest on ballots in Ohio and Texas. Other races included three veterans of the Iraq war seeking congressional nominations in Ohio and a battle for the nomination to challenge Sen. John Cornyn in Texas. Voters in one Vermont community approved a measure calling for the arrest of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. For years, the 61-year-old Kucinich has won re-election by margins of up to 75 percent in a reliably Democratic district. But after sensing early that Joe Cimperman was a formidable opponent, Kucinich abandoned his presidential campaign on Jan. 25, months earlier in the race than he did in 2004, when he also was polling in low one-digit numbers. Joe Cimperman, a Cleveland City Council member and former Kucinich admirer, raised nearly $500,000 and landed high-profile endorsements from the mayor and the city's daily newspaper. "Mr. Kucinich is not a congressman. He's a showman," said Cimperman, 37, who has belittled Kucinich's Hollywood ties and criticized congressional votes Kucinich missed during his presidential campaigns. After leaving the White House race, Kucinich returned to his familiar fighting-for-you mantra to win renomination and landed a quick $700,000 in contributions. "I'm not a patsy for business. I can't be bought," said Kucinich, an unrelenting opponent of the Iraq war. With three other challengers on the ballot, Kucinich was expected to benefit from a divided anti-incumbent vote. North Olmsted Mayor Thomas O'Grady, anti-war activist Rosemary Palmer and former Peace Corps volunteer Barbara Ferris all have campaigned on much smaller budgets. Elsewhere in Ohio, three veterans of the Iraq war sought congressional nominations. Scott Radcliffe, who served two tours of duty as a platoon commander in Iraq, lost his bid to challenge a newly elected Republican in northwest Ohio. Democratic state Sen. John Boccieri, an Air Force reservist who served in Iraq, won the nomination for the northeastern Ohio district being vacated by 18-term Republican Rep. Ralph Regula. Another state senator and Iraq veteran, Army battalion commander Steve Stivers, won the nomination for the seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Deborah Pryce. In Texas, voters were weighing nominations for the U.S. Senate, Congress, the state Legislature and other offices. Four Democrats were competing for the chance to take on Republican incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, who easily defeated consultant Larry Kilgore and already has $7 million for the fall campaign. State Rep. Rick Noriega of Houston, an Army National Guard lieutenant colonel who served in Afghanistan, was the best known and best funded Democrat, though he has less than $1 million with which to campaign against Cornyn. In Houston, several Republicans battled for the nomination in the suddenly open race for Harris County district attorney. The incumbent, Chuck Rosenthal, was forced to resign after a scandal involving the release of dozens of pornographic and racist e-mails. His heir apparent, assistant prosecutor Kelley Siegler, was expected to win the GOP primary, but the scandal has damaged her campaign. The winner will face Democratic former Houston Police Chief C.O. Bradford. In Vermont, voters in the town of Brattleboro endorsed a measure calling for the indictment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on charges of violating the Constitution. The symbolic article seeks to have Bush and Cheney arrested if they visit Brattleboro or to extradite them for prosecution elsewhere _ if they're not impeached first. |
![]() | Sarah Palin & the Wasilla Assembly of God 1 of 2 Three months before she was thrust into the national political spotlight, Gov. Sarah Palin was asked to handle a much smaller task: addressing the graduating class of commission students at her one-time church, Wasilla Assembly of God. Her speech in June provides as much insight into her policy leanings as anything uncovered since she was asked to be John McCain's running mate. Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord. "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan." Religion, however, was not strictly a thread in Palin's foreign policy. It was part of her energy proposals as well. Just prior to discussing Iraq, Alaska's governor asked the audience to pray for another matter -- a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state. "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said. This is person could possibly be the Vice President or, considering the health of her partner J. McCain, furthermore President. Allow me to make a “prophetic declaration” that seems to be more predictive than any pronouncement from pulpits of this sort: the continuation of conversations like this from public officers can do nothing but detriment our civic health. Why is it that some leaders of the United States insist that a “higher power” or “Jesus” is giving them support and providing them with impetus to govern? Why is it that Governor Palin’s friend and obvious ally Steve Allen called “this a god thing?” What does that even mean? I submit that one of the many deleterious effects of claims to religious affiliation is the absence of use of intellectual faculties generally. When GW Bush vetoed federal funding on the most promising research in the history of science, namely stem cell research, he did so because it was a “god thing.” When the Archbishop of Canterbury claims that England ought to adopt Shar’ia law for its muslim population, he did so because it is a “god thing.” In present political situation it is beyond difficult to challenge the religious backing that so many politicians, of classically opposing faiths nonetheless, use to gain support. Look at how this unknown mayor was able to garner support from the faithful by her religious devotion alone. Shouldn’t it be asked what she really believes economically, sociologically, or politically? This is the pain of religious moderation. We no longer hear the truth about her personality but her lofty and diaphanous ideas about how the god of Abraham ought to be consulted for energy policy. One ought to wonder why it is that other nations of opposing religious traditions who seek the same god’s favor in explicitly opposite requests receive his grace at times. Are the believers of Alaska less valuable? Sarah Palin’s preacher, Pastor Kalnins, it seems wouldn’t think so. He has preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith;" and said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode." It is impossible to determine how much Wasilla Assembly of God has shaped Palin's thinking. She was baptized there at the age of 12 and attended the church for most of her adult life. When Palin was inaugurated as governor, the founding pastor of the church delivered the invocation. In 2002, Palin moved her family to a nondenominational church, but she continues to worship at a related Assembly of God church in Juneau. Moreover, she "has maintained a friendship with Wasilla Assembly of God and has attended various conferences and special meetings here," Kalnins' office said in a statement. "As for her personal beliefs," the statement added, "Governor Palin is well able to speak for herself on those issues." Clearly, however, Palin views the church as the source of an important, if sometimes politically explosive, message. "Having grown up here, and having little kids grow up here also, this is such a special, special place," she told the congregation in June. "What comes from this church I think has great destiny." And if the political storm over Barack Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright is any indication, Palin may face some political fallout over the more controversial teachings of Wasilla Assembly of God. |

RTBU Lead Organiser, Mr Phillip Kessey said, Workers are frustrated that RailCorp continue to refuse to listen to their concerns regarding the filling of vacant positions on the Central Coast which has led to commuters and workers safety being compromised. The Committee has met with local politicians David Harris and Marie Andrews who have pledged their support for rail workers. The Campaign to have these positions will commence this week with brochures being handed to commuters after the meeting encouraging them to contact the Minister for Transport, John Watkins to highlight the problem and have safety critical positions on stations filled Mr Kessey went on to say, "Rail Workers on the Central Coast are seeking the support of their local community on this issue to ensure positions were filled in order to maintain safety. It is unfortunate that RailCorp are not listening to the concerns of employees, commuters or Local Members of Parliament. RailCorp is mismanaged and the Minister needs to intervene and ensure commuters are provided with the service they deserve". MEDIA ENQUIRIES: Phillip Kessey — Mobile 0418 671 532 Apology to Commuters Members of the Rail Tram and Bus Union who work on Central Coast railway stations wish to appologise for the decrease in service and safety that is being provided to you due to RailCorp refusing to fill positions on stations. The current unacceptable level of service was demonstrated on Monday when a derailment occurred on your line and due to positions not being filled staff could not provide you with appropriate communication and service. The Rail Tram and Bus Union have raised this issue constantly with RailCorp Senior Management. We have also had meetings with your local members of Parliament and they have made a commitment to support us in helping increase service and safety rather than allow it to decrease. We have also been forced to raise serious safety concerns to the Independent Regulator of Rail. We think it is important that you understand who is responsible for the current situation.
