AFL career
John Longmire was built for playing full-forward. His powerful physique and size earned him the nickname ''Horse''. At North Melbourne, he formed a powerful goalkicking partnership with centre half forward Wayne Carey.
Longmire began his playing career at the Corowa-Rutherglen club in New South Wales, where he won the Ovens & Murray Football League's leading goalkicker title. His ability and size quickly attracted the interest of the North Melbourne VFL club's talent scouts.
He won the Coleman Medal at only 19 years of age, and led the club goalkicking from 1990-4.
In 1990 he won the Club Best and Fairest at North Melbourne.
For some time he held the MCG ground record of 14 goals in a match against Melbourne in 1990.
Post football
He has since returned to Sydney to take up an assistant coaching position with the Sydney Swans.
