'José Rizal University' (JRU) is a non-sectarian, non-stock private educational institution. It is located at Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City, Philippines.
Jose Rizal University was originally established by Don Vicente Fabella as Far Eastern College in 1919, its name was changed to Jose Rizal College in 1922. First located at Arlegui Street, the College transferred to R. Hidalgo Street soon afterwards, moving to its present location in Mandaluyong in 1949. It remained closed throughout the Japanese Occupation, as its head had joined the guerilla movement. Don Vincente Fabella was the first Filipino to obtain a Certificate in Public Accountancy from the United States making as the First Filipino Certified Public Accountant.
Originally offering commerce and high school degrees, the College expanded its offerings to include an elementary school, education and liberal arts at the undergraduate level, and law, business administration, public administration, and education at the graduate level. It has its own research publication, the Journal of Business, Education and Law. The College is especially proud of Ramon Magsaysay who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1933 and who subsequently became the 7th President of the Philippines.
The College obtained Level III accreditation from the PACU-COA in November 1999, and was granted university status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on October 2, 2000.
Jose Rizal University joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1927. The varsity team are the José Rizal Heavy Bombers.
Jose Rizal University aims to develop its students to become useful and responsible citizens through the effective transfer of relevant knowledge and desirable values
1. by providing balanced instruction in general education and technical knowledge,
2. by stressing the principles of representative government in a free society,
3. by inculcating respect for the truth,
4. by teaching the art of the utilization of knowledge, and
5. by encouraging active participation in the process of national development
That's right. Commitments. Much more than mere promises.
1. An education with a seal of quality rarely found elsewhere.
"You (the students) are the battlefield on which future wars will be won or lost...you cannot remain neutral...you will have to take a stand. But keep in mind the principles you have imbibed in the university; keep your faith, and your faith will keep you!."
- President Ramon Magsaysay, BCS '33
· Jose Rizal University is in the coveted Philippine Government (CHED) List of Autonomous and Deregulated colleges and universities of the land, an honor given to only 4% of the nation's 1,282 colleges and universities. This is currently among, if not the highest seal of quality given to universities in the Philippines.
· Key to this honor is Level III (LACOMED) accreditation. Very few institutions have this seal of excellence and distinction. We have it.
· JRU Elementary School is one of the few elementary schools with Level I accreditation in the National Capital Region, a rare distinction.
· JRU High School Division is one of the few secondary schools with Level I accreditation in the National Capital Region, a rare distinction considering that there are 6,598 high schools in the land, 20% of which are concentrated in NCR. (Nationwide, the distribution is 60% public and 40% private.)
· Our elementary school and high school curricula emphasize English, Math and Values as core areas of learning. Our classroom hours (a key indicator of learning) are higher than that of BEC and most other private schools.
· Founded in 1919 by the First Filipino certified public accountant, Jose Rizal University has the singular distinction of having the oldest business education program in the Philippines, which translates to unparalleled experience and competence in curriculum development and business education.
· Among its long list of successful alumni are a President of the Philippines, a justice of the Supreme Court, several members of the Cabinet an Legislature, heads of banks and financial institutions, and leaders of educational institutions, and leaders of educational institutions, captains of industry, commerce, agriculture and trade.
2. An education that is affordable.
We pride our ourselves in providing quality education that is affordable, because we believe that a good liberal education should be available to all. We know we do this better than any other universities in the Philippines. For the past decade, our elementary school and high school fees have consistently ranked at the lowest 10% of all private schools in Metro Manila. While our collegiate and professional school fees have consistently ranked at the lowest 20% of all private universities and colleges in Metro Manila. You will not find a better investment in education than in Jose Rizal University.
3. You will enjoy the journey.
At Jose Rizal University, we like to talk about the "JRU Community", because we believe learning works best where students and teachers interact in the open and challenging environment, what we call the learning journey. JRU is a friendly place. Fitting in is easy. Top faculty and great facilities ensure that critical thinking and mental growth never cease. A wide range of student organizations and activities ensure that the student's potential grows outside the classroom as well. The JRU campus is an ecology-friendly habitat in the heart of Metro manila, an oasis of learning. We can think of no better place to enjoy your child's journey.
The Elementary School was established with the primary objectives of (1) developing the basic skills of communication and rational thought, (2) acquiring functional understanding of mathematical skills and scientific concepts, (3) inculcating desirable habits, attitudes, and ideals of democratic citizenship, and (4) instilling love of God and of the Filipino nation. Elementary education is legally compulsory for all Filipinos of school age, and represents the first phase of basic education, the next being provided by high school.
In addition, the Elementary school places particular emphasis upon developing both familiarity and facility with the English language as quickly as possible, and certain basic desirable virtues which appear to be most effectively provided by the school, rather than the family or the church.

Curriculum
Kindergarten | Grades 1 & 2 | Grade 3 | Grade 4 | Grades 5 & 6
The Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) prescribed by the Department of Education (DepEd) is being implemented of Jose Rizal University (JRU) modified to suit its own educational policies. Since JRU has obtained a deregulated status it is allowed to develop and offer its own elementary school curricula including sequence, content and coverage as well as a choice in the preferred language of instruction. In terms of the number of contact hours, the JRU Curriculum offers more compared to the DepEd's Basic Education Curriculum.
The JRU Elementary School Curriculum meets the national requirements but is further strengthened to enhance instruction reflective of the knowledge, skills and attitudes suited to the ever-changing needs of pupils and society.
The Elementary School places great emphasis on the importance of the English language, and had taken steps to emphasize this particular subject skill. The number of contact hours of English subject in all grade levels is given more minutes. From 80 minutes, English subject of Grades I to II has been increased to 120 minutes, while Grades IV to VI is 100 minutes per day effective school year 2003-2004.
In addition, English will be used as the medium of instructions in Social Studies for all grade levels. It is the University's belief that an early and complete familiarity with the English language is critical to a more effective social and economic role of the child upon maturity.
Furthermore, additional emphasis is also given to Mathematics and Science subjects, as these represent, together with English, the core of the Elementary School Curriculum.
The contents of Good Manners and Right Conduct have been especially suited to the needs of the elementary pupils, and takes into consideration those values which are best handled by the school, as contrasted with those which may be better undertaken by the parents and by religious authorities.

Kindergarten
The Kindergarten class answers the needs of parents with intelligent children who may still be too young to be enrolled in Grade I, yet capable of participating and developing early learning potential under supervised activity. Kindergarten also introduces the child to social interaction with children of the same age, and eases the transition into more formal education in Grade I.
The medium of instruction for the kindergarten class is primarily English, with the Filipino language utilized as an auxiliary medium. Kindergarten pupils are required to wear the same uniforms as those worn by the elementary pupils in Grades I to IV.
