The coining of the term by columnist Akio Nakamori dates back to the mid-1990s, a period marked by significant increase in the number of child models and works involving individuals in that age range. Eventually, this neologism fell out of use and was replaced, in the early years of the 21st century, by 'Junior Idol'.
Effectively speaking there is no strict definition of the the age range such a term implies, with idols as young as 3 years of age and as old as 18. Due to age diversity, artists are usually grouped in several sub-categories, such as U-6, U-12 or U-15.
Concerning the contents of the titles (usually photo-books and DVDs) put on sale, these include, in general terms, footage of the idols trying out a variety of outfits, such as school uniforms, gym clothes, yukata or even maid and anime inspired costumes.
Though not pornographic in nature (Japanese law defines child pornography as the explicit visual representation of a child relating to sexual intercourse, or of a child who is naked or partially so, with the purpose of arousing or stimulating the viewers' sexual desire)[1], the risqué nature of some works has generated criticism, both internal and international[2], and even attempts to forbid such materials from being published, all of which have, as of 2007, been unsuccessful.[3]
