History
KFVS-TV signed on the air on October 3, 1954. It was owned by Oscar G. Hirsch, a radio shop operator who had signed on the area's first radio station, KFVS (AM 980, now KZIM), in 1925. Channel 12 didn't have cameras at first. Instead, the station's first broadcast showed slides of its new tower, which was under construction at the time. In 1960, KFVS-TV activated its new 2,000-foot tower. At the time, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world, and is still one of the 10 tallest man-made structures in the world[1].
Hirsch sold KFVS-TV to Aflac in 1979. Aflac sold its entire broadcasting division, including KFVS, to a group headed by Retirement Systems of Alabama, who merged it with Ellis Communications a few months later to form Raycom Media.
KFVS12 serves more than fifty counties in four states: all of Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, and a portion of Northwest Tennessee. The KFVS market ranks as the nation's 81st largest out of 211 total television markets[2]. The station refers to its viewing area as "The Heartland."
The KFVS over-the-air signal carries into the St. Louis eastern suburb of Belleville, Illinois, although taller hills between the transmitter and metropolitan St. Louis prevent the signal from reaching into the city proper. KFVS's coverage area overlaps KMOV-TV, the St. Louis CBS affiliate. Cable outlets in several northern KFVS counties and southern KMOV counties receive both stations.
Newscasts
KFVS produces roughly 25 hours of news per week. The station has used "Heartland News" as its moniker for newscasts for decades. It boasts two of the longest-tenured anchors in the country; Mike Shain started his on-air work as a news anchor in 1972[1], while Bob Reeves has been delivering weather reports since 1970.[2] KFVS uses live NWS NOAA radar data from several regional sites in a forecasting system presented on-air as "Storm Team Digital Doppler". The main signal comes from the radar located next to the NWS office in Paducah. WQWQ-TV re-broadcasts the weekday edition of ''The Breakfast Show'' from 7-9 AM and the weekday ''Heartland News at Noon'' from 1-1:30 PM.
