KALISPELL, MONTANA

'Kalispell' is a city in Flathead County, Montana, USA. The population was 14,223 at the 2000 census. A 2004 estimate placed its population at 17,381. It is the county seat of Flathead County. Kalispell is the largest city and commercial center of Northwest Montana. The name Kalispell is a Salish Indian word meaning "flat land above the lake."
Kalispell is served by Glacier Park International Airport for air travel. For train travel, it is served by Amtrak Empire Builder.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.1 km² (5.5 mi²), all land.
Kalispell is located 7 mi (11 km) north of Flathead Lake, which is the largest natural freshwater lake in the continental United States west of the Mississippi River.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 14,223 people, 6,142 households, and 3,494 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,005.8/km² (2,605.7/mi²). There were 6,532 housing units at an average density of 461.9/km² (1,196.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.84% White, 0.28% African American, 1.22% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.55% of the population. 21.7% were of German, 12.0% Irish, 11.3% Norwegian, 10.7% English and 6.6% United States or American ancestry according to Census 2000.
There were 6,142 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.1% were non-families. 36.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.209 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,567, and the median income for a family was $36,554. Males had a median income of $29,431 versus $20,122 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,224. About 10.1% of families and 15.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.1% of those under age 18 and 13.0% of those age 65 or over.
