'Karen' is a suburb of
Nairobi in
Kenya, lying south west of the city centre. Contrary to popular belief, Karen is not named after
Karen Blixen, the author of ''
Out of Africa'', but her cousin, Karen Melchior, whose father was the owner of the Karen Coffee Company. (Karen Blixen was actually known as Tanne (or Tania) von Blixen while she lived in Nairobi). Karen borders the
Ngong Road Forest and is home to the
Ngong Racecourse. It is also known for its large
European population. Karen and
Langata jointly form a somewhat isolated area of high-income housing.
The
Nyumbani Orphanage is located in Karen.
