KATHLEEN MCGOWAN
'Kathleen McGowan' is an American author, lyricist, screenwriter, and self-proclaimed descendant of Jesus of Nazareth and Mary Magdalene.
McGowan began her career as a teenage journalist in Hollywood and moved to Ireland at the age of 21 to work as an activist in human and civil rights. She studied folklore, mythology, and storytelling and also met her Irish-born husband, Peter McGowan. McGowan has worked as a freelance writer and also spent a number of years working in Hollywood for several studios. Her first book, "The Tragic Kingdom: Inside Michael Eisner's Disney," was listed for publication but was never actually released. She collaborates as a songwriter with her husband in their Celtic rock band.
According to the author, her first novel, ''The Expected One'', is based on almost 20 years of research on four continents, as well as what she says are her own visions of Mary Magdalene. It is the first book in The Magdalene Line trilogy and was self-published in 2005 with 2,500 copies sold. Simon & Schuster, Inc. is publishing under the Touchstone imprint with a first printing of 280,000 copies and a release date of July 25th, 2006. It has been picked up in 26 languages worldwide. The book reached number 13 on the New York Times bestseller list.
There has been great controversy over McGowan's belief that a union between Mary Magdalene and Jesus produced children, and as a result that bloodline exists today with millions of people potentially descended from these biblical ancestors. McGowan's work is unique in the genre in that she believes that Jesus was married to Magdalene and had children, but that he was nonetheless divine, performed miracles, and was resurrected.
Her second book in the trilogy, "The Book of Love", follows the legend of a gospel that was written in Jesus' own hand. It is due for release in March 2008.
