Kayla is Tom and Nora's 12-year-old daughter whom Tom and Lynette are trying to include in the family, which was initially hard due to Nora trying to push her way into the family.
However, this all changed when a hostage situation took place that resulted in the death of Nora, Kayla's mother. In her last few breaths, Nora told Lynette to take care of her daughter as if she were her own. After Nora's death, Kayla stays with her grandmother for a while. Later, she moves in with the Scavos full time, but Kayla won't listen to Lynette. When Lynette gave Kayla her childhood doll, Nelly, Kayla deliberately dragged her up the stairs, smacking her face against the stair banisters, ripped off her arms, stuffed her with chili, then dumped her in the garbage.
Kayla has rarely been seen since the doll incident, but has returned occasionally to create problems for Lynette. One example was the time when Lynette took the children to an ice cream parlor, and Kayla refused to leave before eating the remains of her ice cream. When Lynette tried to reason with her and finally tried to drag her out, Kayla began screaming and shouting "You don't tell me what to do! You're not my mother!!" in front of stunned onlookers. Lynette then bribed Porter, Preston and Parker to drag Kayla into the car by promising them that they could eat dinner in front of the TV every night for a whole week.
Even though Tom tried to reason with her, Kayla still deliberately created problems for Lynette. For example, Lynette took an extra week off after her wounded shoulder to help Tom with the Pizzeria at the street fair. When Ed showed up with flowers, Kayla told Ed that Lynette had lied and was at the street fair. Ed went to the street fair and confronted her. Lynette begged for her job, but after seeing her son Parker's disappointed face, she later decided to quit her job to work with Tom in their new pizzeria. In one episode Tom and the kids came to the pizzeria to surprise her, and Kayla noticed the chemistry between Lynette and Rick. Kayla told Tom she thought Lynette liked Rick, prompting Tom suggested to Lynette he should come back to work and fire Rick. Kayla is seen to be deliberately manipulating Tom, she puts doubts in Tom's mind about his and Lynette's marriage, and reveals potentially damaging secrets to him.
Kayla has been seen whispering in the ear of Parker's dog, saying that she's planning to ask someone to be her boyfriend. It is unknown who this boy is, or if this is of any significance or just part of Mary Alice's example of how to recognize lonely people.
In the season three finale, while Lynette's mother Stella is babysitting the kids, Kayla tells her about Rick, in exchange for being allowed to watch "a grown-up movie".
