'Kesago Nakajima' (中島 今朝吾, ''Nakajima Kesago'') (1881 – 1945) was a Lieutenant-General in the
Imperial Japanese Army and, as commanding officer of the Japanese 16th Division in
Nanking during the
Second Sino-Japanese War, was responsible for
Nanjing massacre in December 1937.
Serving as commandant of the Chemical Warfare School from 1933 to 1936, Nakajima was appointed
Provost Marshal and was commander in Chief of the
Central Army District, before eventually being assigned as acting general officer attached to the 16th Division in Nanking, China.
Under the elderly General
Iwane Matsui, Nakajima was named Direct operational commander in the
Nanking Operation in late-1937. Due to ill heath however, Matsui was releved of his duties in November 1937 by
Prince Asaka who temporarily assumed command of the division.
Officially succeeding Matsui's former command on December 5, 1937, Matsui became theater commander. On December 10, 1937, the Shanghai Expeditionary Force began its attack on Nanking, and the Kuomintang forces that remained surrendered on December 13, 1937; the
Nanjing massacre began immediately afterwards.
He was next given command of the
Fourth Army, in Manchukuo from 1938 to 1939 and then attached to the General Staff and retired before the end of 1939.
