KHOST
'Khost' or 'Khowst' (, Dari (Persian): خوست - ''Xowst'') is a border town in eastern Afghanistan. Khost is the capital of Khost Province, which is a mountainous region near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.
During the nine-year Soviet war in Afghanistan in the 1980s, the town was besieged for more than eight years. Khost's airstrip, with its 9,000-foot runway, served as a base for helicopter operations by Soviet armies.
The Khost airstrip is being used (as of May 2007) by American forces during the United States war in Afghanistan that commenced in October 2001.
Khost is the home of Khost University.
