★ Kingdom of Italy (medieval), the Frankish successor state of the Lombard kingdom formed in 839 then a constituent kingdom of the Holy Roman Empire from 962to 1806. In later centuries it was no more than a shadow of an Imperial claim to hegemony in a subdivided Italy.
