KIRKBY STEPHEN

'Kirkby Stephen' is a small market town in Cumbria, England. It was historically part of Westmorland. It is located on the A685. The River Eden, rises 6 miles away in the fells above Mallerstang Dale, and passes east of the town centre.
The town is notable for the large parish church, known locally as the "Cathedral of the Dales", which contains a relief of the Norse god Loki who is shown bound and chained.[1]
The town holds weekly markets and there are a number of antique shops located in the town, which also serves as a base for walking tours of the Dales.
Among many scenic features in the area are Devils Hole, in Stenkrith Park - south of the town on the B6259 road to Nateby, Nine Standards Rigg to the north-east of the town, Pendragon Castle[2] and Wild Boar Fell, to the south.
It is served by Kirkby Stephen railway station, on the Settle-Carlisle mainline which is located over a mile from the town, as the rail-line avoided dropping down into the Eden Valley.
