'Knightsen' is a census-designated place (CDP) in Contra Costa County, California, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 861.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²), all land.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 861 people, 281 households, and 214 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 66.4/km² (171.7/mi²). There were 289 housing units at an average density of 22.3/km² (57.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 75.96% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 1.39% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.70% Pacific Islander, 12.54% from other races, and 9.06% from two or more races. 26.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 281 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% were non-families. 17.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was 3.42.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.6 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $58,929, and the median income for a family was $64,643. Males had a median income of $48,500 versus $32,708 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,191. About 7.3% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 19.8% of those age 65 or over.

History


Knightsen was founded in 1898 when it became a stop for the Atchinson Topeka and Santa Fe railroad. Knightsen's founder was George Knight. He was married to a woman by the last name of Christensen thus the two names were combined to become Knightsen. Knightsen has primarily been a farming community. Growing such foods as almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, etc. It still contains a few U-pick vegetable/fruit stands. Knightsen now is home to many horse ranches.
